I think this is a street scene in Gaeta. My camera doesn’t always link the location to the photo.

Fun fact, John Cabot was born here.

Rating: Explicit
Length: 8100
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply

Themes: Inept in love, Friends to lovers, First time, Favorite fanworks

Summary: In which Rodney and John fail to pay attention.

Reccer's Notes: For me, this is the ultimate "inept in love" fic. It's clever, very funny, and brilliantly written, as Rodney bounces blithely from assumption to oblivious assumption, with John startled by the sudden sex they're having, but somehow never managing to communicate clearly that Rodney's got it all wrong about them being in a relationship - until it's finally totally clear that they both are. An all-time classic!

Dinner plans shifted about halfway through cooking: I'd planned to make boxed macaroni and cheese with some vegetables added in, but the vegetables ended up smelling so good, I ditched the cheese. Sauteed onions, garlic, and herbs with rapini and canned tomatoes might've taken well to the cheese sauce, but I'm pleased at how it came out just the same.

My new plan is to make boxed macaroni and cheese with double the cheese sauce at some point in the future, and feel absurdly luxurious for being able to do so.

Author's Summary:

An alien truth-telling device, an empty lab at 2 AM, and two people who've spent years not saying what they really think.
What could possibly go wrong?
(Spoiler: Everything. And also nothing. It's complicated.)

Why This Must Be Read:

A fun work where, as the summary says, an alien device makes Jack and Sam say what they've been thinking for a long time.

And, oh, the pining! It's subtle and nicely done.

Amnesty is over!

The theme for February is Aliens Made Them Do It. For the purposes of this theme "it" doesn't have to be sex; if you want to write about aliens (or other similar beings) forcing characters to cook or dance or play chess, go right ahead!

Posting guidelines are here, and if you have any recs or prompts you'd like to share, you can leave them in the comments using the templates below:

Title: The Joy of Voyeurism
Fandom: Gourmet Gamer
Content Notes: None applicable

"Rim, why do you like making food for people so much, even if you can't taste it?"

It was Saturday, and Mellina had invited Rim and the other REAL players to hang out again. Rim, of course, had volunteered to let everyone stay at his place while he cooked a delicious dinner.

"Well, it's… I can't let my cooking skills fade away, right? And, when I see someone eating my food, and looking super happy, it's almost like I'm eating the food along with them!"

"Food voyeur," Mellina chuckled to herself as soon as she thought of the name."

☔️ or ❄️?

Just checked the long‑range forecast for my wife’s cross‑country skiing adventures. So far things look decent through February 13—after that, the rain will likely wipe out whatever snow we’ve managed to accumulate. Long‑range forecasts can shift, of course, but getting a solid month or more of skiable conditions in our maritime climate is rare enough that I’ll take any good news.

As I’ve mentioned before, it doesn’t take much to change our fortunes. A shift of the storm track by as little as 50 nautical miles can mean the difference between a fresh snowfall and a cold, miserable rain. Life on the edge of the rain–snow line keeps things interesting.

Groundhog day

I’m a little torn on the new “groundhog” making waves this year. Lucy the Lobster has apparently joined the weather‑forecasting circuit, and I have questions.

For starters, a lobster has no burrow. That alone feels like a major strike against any shadow‑based meteorological authority. And even if Lucy did have a burrow, I’m not convinced a lobster is equipped to interpret its own shadow in the first place.

All of this lands, fittingly enough, on the anniversary of the Groundhog Day Gale—a reminder that real weather doesn’t care much for mascots, crustacean or otherwise. It’s charming, it’s quirky, it’s very East Coast, but as forecasting methods go, it’s… let’s say unconventional.

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Via Alaska SeaLife Center, which writes:

Un’a is proving to be one tough (and smart!) little otter. Despite her rare arm injury that she had when admitted, she shows minimal signs of discomfort and is staying active and curious.

Our veterinary and animal care teams continue to monitor her closely and support her healing with gentle physical therapy (more on this soon!). Luckily for Un’a, floating is a natural part of her day, which helps keep weight off her arm.

An injury like this would have been a serious challenge in the wild, but with a little extra care, she is not letting anything slow her down.
